Did you know?
Someone gave me a brand new car for my birthday!
But before I tell you that fascinating story, let me digress for awhile.
Most of you know by now that I’m an Entrepreneur.
Preacher, yes, but Entrepreneur, too.
Inspirational Author, yes, but Businessman, too.
I run three non-profit orgs and help lead two others: Shepherd’s Voice Publications; Shepherd’s Voice TV & Radio Foundation; Anawim, our ministry for the poor; Light of Jesus, a lay community, and our Counselling Center.
But at the same breath, I also run a number of for-profit ventures. I invest in real estate, dabble in mutual funds, run a training company, operate an educational center, teach financial literacy, and yep, earn money.
A few people don’t like that. I receive thousands of emails, all of them positive. But recently, I received two critical ones. How’s that for few?
These two emails told me they don’t like me anymore because I’ve become a businessman. I have a feeling they want me to remain as I was some 15 years ago, when I was a “purely” spiritual person.
Gosh. I pity these people.
What’s wrong with a layman like me having a business and earning money? I’m not a priest. I’ve got a wife to support and two kids who need milk and extra-large diapers every day.
The Ultimate Purpose of Wealth
Is To Love Others
One of the emails goes this way: “Do you have to be as rich as Mike Velarde?”
I literally cracked up.
Let me set the record straight.
Mike is Mike — a multi-millionaire who lives in a massive mansion in Ayala, Alabang, with probably a platoon of shiny cars in his garage. He owns buildings and entire subdivisions.
I, on the other hand, live in a tiny 65 square meter house in a third class subdivision that doesn’t even have running water.
But honestly? We love our little, simple, neighbourhood. And we love our itsy bitsy home! We have no intentions of moving up even if we have the money to do so.
Why do I live this way? Where do I put my money?
My wife and I have decided to share a large portion of what I earn to God’s ministry and to the poor.
Hey, listen up. There’s nothing wrong with money.
Earn as much as you can. I’m doing that, and I’m having fun doing so.
But I believe that the ultimate purpose of wealth is to love others – not to buy Rolexes and BMWs.
Speaking of cars, let me now tell you about my car…
The Fascinating Story of My New Car
For the longest time, I’ve been driving a beat up, noisy, rusty, old Isuzu. (Some of you may have seen me stranded somewhere on EDSA.) I knew the car’s useful life was coming to a close, so a few weeks ago, I was on the lookout for a replacement – a good second-hand car.
Why second-hand? I’ve got money to buy a brand new car, but again, I’ve decided to put my money elsewhere: tithes, alms, and business investments. Actually, tithes and alms are the greatest investments. You invest in Heaven.
So anyway, here I was looking for a good second-hand car to replace my old one.
Not knowing that one of my close friends was buying me a car as a birthday gift!
So on my birthday last July, she gave me a brand-new Toyota Innova — complete with a red ribbon on the dashboard.
For the next 24 hours, I was in shock.
My wife had to carry me to the sofa, give me a drink of water, and lead me to do deep breathing exercises.
Who in her right mind would give me a brand new car?
I realized someone with three characteristics…
First, someone who’s very rich.
Second, someone who’s generous because she believes that the ultimate purpose of her wealth is to love.
And third, someone who loves me!
And friends, it wasn’t the car that really hit me hard. It was the huge love this person had for me.
The Fascinating Story of My Friend
Do you envy me?
That I have a new car?
Don’t.
Years from now, this car will rust and I’ll be on the lookout for a good second-hand car again.
Who should you envy?
My friend.
My friend who has the ability to give a car away.
My friend who knows how to earn money and give it away.
That’s our goal.
I want to teach Filipinos how to handle money, save money, invest money, and multiply money — and give it away.
Are you ready to learn?
Are you ready to be like my friend one of these days?
The choice is yours.
Why I Like Money
This is the reason why I like money.
I’m able to send a number of poor kids to school.
I’m able to house poor, abandoned elderly until they go to Heaven.
I’m able to preach to millions of people through radio and television.
Money helps me do that.
I heard somewhere that the estimated annual budget of all the Missionary of Charity houses founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta all over the world is $40 million.
Is that good money or bad money?
I think that’s holy money.
I don’t love money. That’s the root of all evil.
But I like money because it can do a lot of good.
Do you want to do a lot of good?
Let me say it again.
The choice is yours.
