Prayers for Matigsalug Tribes

Datu

ritual

The Matigsalug is a distinct sub-group of indigenous peoples within the Manobo group. They lived in the mountains of Mindanao. There are 50,000 Matigsalugs in these ranges.
Oral Tradition has said that their original settlement was at the mouth of Salug River, which is now Davao City.

What Are Their Lives Like?
Social life for the Matigsalug is patriarchal, or male-dominated. The head of the family is the husband. Polygamy is common, and allowed according to a man’s wealth.
The political structure of the Matigsalug is hierarchal. A ruler, called datu, is the head of the group.

What are their beliefs?
Their religious beliefs are revolved around the concept that there are many unseen spirits who interfere in the lives of humans. The spirits are also believed to have human characteristics. They are both good and evil in nature and can evoked to both anger and pleasure. Their culture believes in one “great spirit” is usually viewed as the creator figure.

What are their needs?
The farming techniques they used are very primitive. There is a great need of agricultural development projects to educate them on such things.

They speak a different dialect. This has made learning to speak and write their languages very difficult for outsiders.

Spiritually, the Matigsalugs need a Savior! They must be told that there is a loving God who longs to make them a part of His family.
Intercessors are needed to daily stand in the gap and pray for the salvation of these precious people. Prayer alone has the power to break through the strongholds of spirit worship.
